The Bridge for Resilience, Empowerment, and Development Organization today issued guidance to residents of Karachi following recent alerts by municipal authorities concerning structurally vulnerable buildings. The advisory underscores the organization’s commitment to public safety, resilience, and inclusive urban preparedness, aligning with the objectives of Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being).
In view of increasing structural risks across several residential areas, BREDO called on communities to adhere to precautionary measures and to cooperate fully with local coordination efforts to ensure the protection of lives and the continuity of essential services.
Key Safety Guidance:
| I | Move to Open Spaces and Safe Temporary Gathering (STG) Points | Residents should leave any building identified as unsafe and proceed to STG points or open areas like parks and playgrounds. These designated spaces ensure protection, coordination, and support, advancing community resilience in line with SDG 11. |
| II | Use Temporary Shelters for Safety and Coordination | Schools, community halls, and mosques functioning as STG points provide secure spaces where residents can gather, register, and access assistance. This structured approach strengthens safe and inclusive community environments. |
| III | Access Medical Support | Residents with injuries or health concerns should seek care at the nearest hospital or medical camp near STG points. Ensuring timely access to healthcare reflects SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by prioritizing lives and emergency readiness. |
| IV | Carry Essential Items | When evacuating, residents are advised to take mobile phones, identification, water, essential medications, and light protective gear. Proper preparedness enhances personal safety and supports efficient community response. |
| V | Stay Informed and Follow Official Instructions | Residents should follow updates from local authorities and coordinators at STG points. Adhering to official guidance ensures safe, organized responses, helping build resilient and sustainable urban communities. |
BREDO’s Continuing Engagement
BREDO is actively coordinating with local authorities and community networks to provide technical guidance, support STG point management and reinforce public awareness. Through these interventions, the organization reaffirms its commitment to advancing community safety, preventative action and sustainable urban development in Karachi.
