PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Public Awareness
Karachi, Pakistan
The Bridge for Resilience Environments & Development Organization (BREDO) alerts citizens that University Road will remain closed from November 11 to December 30, 2025, due to ongoing construction under the K4 Water Supply Project. This closure is necessary for excavation and large-diameter pipe-laying work, which is essential to strengthening Karachi’s long-term water distribution network.
The Organization urges residents, commuters, and institutions in the vicinity to plan alternate routes and practice road safety discipline as development teams execute critical public infrastructure upgrades for the city’s sustainable future.
Public Advisory: Safety and Hazard Awareness
Infrastructure construction enhances urban resilience but temporarily increases safety risks. Citizens are strongly encouraged to observe the following guidelines:
| 1 | Avoid restricted zones at all times. Unauthorized entry can lead to serious injury due to deep trenches and active heavy machinery. |
| 2 | Motorcyclists should wear helmets, masks, and reflective jackets, particularly near detours and nighttime routes. |
| 3 | Drivers are requested to slow down and comply with traffic police directions at diversion points. Sudden lane changes near barricades must be avoided. |
| 4 | Pedestrians should use designated walkways and refrain from crossing through machinery zones. |
| 5 | No parking along barriers or excavation edges, as blocked lanes can delay emergency or project vehicles. |
Night operations are expected for 24-hour work cycles. Motorists are urged to keep headlights on low beam, maintain safe distance, and drive cautiously when approaching construction signage.
Environmental and Health Precautions
The excavation phase will release dust and particulate matter, especially in dry weather. This may cause discomfort to nearby residents. BREDO, in collaboration with KDA’s environment team, recommends:
| 1 | Keep windows and doors closed during excavation hours and high winds. |
| 2 | Use face masks or cloth coverings when passing through the area. |
| 3 | Cover food and water containers to avoid contamination. |
| 4 | Individuals with asthma or respiratory issues should minimize outdoor exposure between 11 AM–4 PM. |
| 5 | Shopkeepers should use plastic curtains or covers to protect displayed goods. |
KDA’s daily water sprinkling operations and BREDO’s environmental monitors will help reduce dust levels and maintain compliance with air quality standards.
Sustainability Commitment
BREDO emphasizes that the K4 Project is a vital element of Karachi’s Sustainable Infrastructure Plan, designed with attention to environmental safety, efficient resource use, and community resilience.
| 1 | Construction units are employing low-emission machinery and recycled materials. |
| 2 | Excavated soil and debris will be reused for ground restoration and greenbelt rehabilitation. |
| 3 | Upon completion, BREDO and local partners will collaborate to replant trees and greenery along University Road. |
The initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), notably SDG 6 (Clean Water & Sanitation) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities & Communities), by improving water access and urban livability.
Community Cooperation and Responsibility
BREDO underscores that the success of urban sustainability depends on citizen awareness and cooperation.
| 1 | Noise and dust are temporary but necessary for long-term infrastructure improvement. |
| 2 | Compliance with traffic advisories ensures everyone’s safety. |
| 3 | Citizens are encouraged to report unsafe activities or environmental violations near the site. |
Residents can contact the BREDO Helpline (+92 337 213 1720) or visit www.thebredo.org for real-time updates, safety advisories, and environmental impact summaries.
Closing Note
The temporary closure of University Road is a short-term inconvenience for long-term benefit. The Organization urges all residents to cooperate responsibly as Karachi transitions toward a safer, cleaner, and more resilient city. Collective patience and environmental mindfulness will ensure project success and public safety.
