Building a Resilient Karachi with BREDO
Every year on 13 October, the world observes the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) to highlight the importance of reducing the risks and impacts of disasters. This day reminds us that disasters are not only about natural hazards, such as floods, earthquakes, heatwaves, or fires, but also about our preparedness, planning, and resilience as communities.
In a rapidly growing city like Karachi, where millions face daily risks due to unplanned urbanization, climate change, and a lack of safety awareness, disaster risk reduction (DRR) is no longer a choice; it is a necessity.
Why DRR Matters for Karachi
Karachi is highly vulnerable to:
- Urban flooding and drainage failures
- Heatwaves and fire outbreaks
- Industrial and road accidents
- Earthquake risks and building collapse
Despite these threats, many communities remain unprepared. That is why building a culture of prevention and early preparedness is crucial. Disasters cannot always be stopped, but their impact can be reduced before they strike.
BREDO’s Commitment to Safer Communities
As a new but purpose-driven organization, BREDO (Bridging Emergency & Disaster Risk Organization) is committed to empowering communities in Karachi through:
Rescue & First Response Training
Training local volunteers, youth, and workers in first aid, fire safety, and emergency response.
Community Awareness Programs
Educating families, schools, shops, and informal settlements about risk reduction and safe evacuation practices.
Inclusion of Vulnerable Groups
Through IDAP (Inclusion for Differently-Abled Persons), we ensure that people with disabilities are not left behind in disaster plans.
Partnership & Preparedness
Collaborating with local stakeholders to strengthen emergency preparedness at the community level.
From Response to Prevention
At BREDO, we believe:
“Saving lives begins long before a disaster occurs.”
Preparedness is more powerful than response. By teaching people how to react, where to go, and what to do, we reduce fear, panic, and loss. Our goal is to build a Karachi where every household is aware, every school is trained, and every neighborhood is resilient.
A Call to Action
On this International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, BREDO pledges to continue its mission of saving lives through awareness, training, and community engagement.
